How it all began
Gunvor Backman and her husband Torsten opened their first café on Korkeavuorenkatu in Helsinki in 1957. Café Succès still operates in the same location and remains owned by the same family.
Café Esplanad was founded in 1994, when a space became available in the heart of Helsinki that was deemed suitable for a café. The timing and location called for slightly bigger thinking than on Korkeavuorenkatu, so a liquor license was considered a natural part of the concept. We brought a fresh breeze to a Helsinki hit by recession — a small golden moment in everyday life.
For us, customer service, freshness, and above all quality are the principles we follow every day as we prepare to serve our customers.
